The sentence - Definition and Types with Examples



 Definition - A sentence is an arrangement of a group of words that makes a complete and        meaning full sense.
            There are five kinds of sentence -
1.        Assertive
2.       Interrogative
3.       Imperative
4.       Optative
5.       Exclamatory

Assertive sentence -  When we need to give some facts or things whether positive or negative, we use assertive sentence.

       Example -
A-     Rahul has done his graduation from Lucknow.
B-      He went to Delhi yesterday.
C-      She may win the prize.
D-      Ravi has not been reading the newspaper.
E-      I have no money.
F-      Barking dogs seldom bite.

Interrogative sentence -  When we need to ask someone a question, we use an  interrogative sentence.

                  Interrogative sentence are two types -
A.      Yes /no – questions
B.      Wh –question.

            A) (Yes /No question) -  Structure-  Auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + other words?

            Example-
1.       Do you read any newspaper?
2.       Does he smoke?
3.       Will he pass the examination?
4.       Can you speak English?

           B) (WH- question) - In root there are nine basic types.
1.       Who – for person(to find out subject)
2.       Whom—for person (to find out object)
3.       Whose
4.       What—for things
5.       Which – when choice is restricted.
6.       Where—for place.
7.       When – for time.
8.       Why –for reason.
9.       How –for methods, health.

     Example -
1.       What happened?
2.       Who discovered the law of speed?
3.       Where do you live?
4.       Which hand do you use?
5.       When you get up?
6.       Why was he late?
7.       How are you?
8.       Whose horse won the race?

 Imperative sentence -  When we need to express some command, request and advice, we use imperative sentences.

       Example-
1)    come on.
2)    Help the poor.
3)    Have a cup of tea.
4)    Never tell a lie.


Optative sentences -  When we need to express a wish/prayer/curse to someone, we use optative sentence.

      Example-
1.     Wish you a happy birthday!
2.     May you be successful!
3.     May you live long!
4.     May the building collapse!
5.     May success kiss your pen!


 Exclamatory sentences - When we need to express some strong and sudden feeling of surprise, sorrow, joy, anger, regret, contempt,harted etc. we use exclamatory sentences.

             Example -
1)    What a girl!
2)    How beautiful!
3)    How bad!
4)    How dare you!
5)    Hurrah! We have won the match.
